Magnesium What?

Magnesium supplementation is a bit of a mine-field. With so many blends and types it’s almost impossible to know where to start. Take a blend or dosage that isn’t quite optimal for you and you’ll end up sitting on the loo (of course if you’re taking magnesium to support constipation that this isn’t such an issue!)

Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body and is needed for hundreds of different processes. It's important for performance, hormonal balance & mental health. Yet so many of us are deficient due to poor diet, pregnancy, illness and medications - if you’re taking an oral contraceptive you’re more likely to be magnesium deficient!

Magnesium supplements come in so many forms:

Magnesium Citrate
Magnesium Glycerate
Magnesium Oxide
Magnesium Malate
Magnesium Sulphide
Magnesium Chloride

And delivery method can be complicated too! Should you take it in tablet form, powder form, oil spray or through epsom salts in your bath?

To check some boxes off easily. If you are taking magnesium to support your training and muscle recovery then magnesium topically is a great place to start. You can massage magnesium oil into your skin to directly target muscles with tension and soreness or you can soak in the bath and relieve those heavy training burdened legs. If you’re having a bath, why not make it a recovery bath? recovery your muscles, recover your mind and take some well deserved time out because you need to.

This is where it gets trickier because type and dosage of supplements is always individual and far from a one size fits all approach but I’ll leave you with these nuggets because you’ll find them on the first page of google anyway.

Magnesium Malate & Magnesium Citrate can help you to poop

Magnesium Glycerate can support sleep, stress and hormonal balance

Magnesium Suphide & Chloride are typically used in flake forms for baths.

It's possible to get your recommended daily intake from a well balanced and varied diet. Food first is my favourite way to approach getting enough magnesium in your diet.
